3D Environment Unit 41

I think that a 3D environment in games is when all assets and characters are 3 dimensional.

Wiki: A 3D environment in games is also referred to as virtual reality, all interactives are 3D.

My game idea is a first person open world survival game. The game Stranded Deep is similar to this as they both are survival games based on islands. It will also be similar to the forest as they will have similar 3D assets.

Stranded Deep 3D environment analysis (Same Narrative)

Texture and Terrain - Textures and terrains are quite realistic in this game. The rock and trees look like they have good graphics in the image. The sand in this also looks realistic as we can see that where the sand meets the sea as it is wet. Furthermore the smoothness in this sand represents escapism and isolation as the sand is undisturbed by any human footprints. This makes the player feel like they are alone on their own paradise island.

Lighting - There is a daylight cycle in this game so a lot of the lighting is based on this. Shadowing in this game is also quite realistic, shadows are facing the correct way based on the direction of the sun. The way the sun is emerging through the clouds could be a symbol of hope. The way that the sun reflects on the sand I feel is quite unrealistic.

Animation - Animations appear to be quite realistic as you can see the waves in the water. The depth of the sea clearly changes as it meets the land. This quite clearly shows the use of blending was used when this 3D environment was made as they both look merged together well.

The Forest 3D environment analysis (Same Genre)

Texture and Terrain - The trees in this game look very realistic as they follow the look of what real pine trees look like. Also the rocks and ground complement each other well, they look like they could be found in the same environment together. The scaling in this game is to scale with the boat, the way that the trees tower over the boat might make the player feel small and feel like they really are lost in a forest.

Lighting - The lighting in the image of the game looks very realistic, the way that the skyline breaks through the trees adds realism to the forest much like what you would expect to see in real life. A reflection of the sunlight can clearly be seen in the stream.

Animation - The attention to detail in the animations in this game can clearly be seen in the stream by the way the ripples of water are laid out. The water breaks are a lot smaller towards the bank of the stream and spread out more in the center.

Peer assessment of 3D game environment analysis

General comments - Good description of each area

What went well - Clear idea in each paragraph, good points

Even better if - You complete all points

Perspective Views For Initial 3D Environment Ideas

This is a basic birds eye view for the initial idea of my survival island 3D landscape. Trees and bushes are depicted in the North of the island among other vegetations. A top down perspective view of a shipwreck can also be see in the North along the right side shoreline. Cliffs are located on West shoreline and an abandoned sea fort is located next to a pool of water at the South of the island.

This is a 3D depiction of the abandoned sea fort located at the South of my birds eye view drawing. The fort is based on real world war sea forts that were made during the second world war to defend certain places from air attacks.

This is an image of an actual sea fort that gave me inspiration for the idea of one in my 3D environment. These example sea forts are based in the pacific ocean which coincidentally  is where multiple desert islands are located which my 3D environment is based on.

Development log

Point of view step by step

First I made a basic solid sky and floor and then I added my circus tent. Then I took extra care in making the big top tent completely symmetrical and put it on the scene.

Next I changed the sky to make it look more apocalyptic and then I darkened the grass. I made this darkened style while following the initial brief of the 'clowning around' game.

After this I made a path with an idea of where I could place attractions to demonstrate that it was a view of a funfair. The attractions I added was a duck shoot game, a strong man game, a ferris wheel, a cage on wheels for the exotic animals and the alien meteor that causes the apocalypse.

This is the top view of my fun fair, the general layout of the attractions match the POV sketch.

Creating 3D Environment step by step

Making the terrain

1. Firstly I created a blank 3D terrain for the environment. I did this by right-clicking and going to 3D object > Terrain.

2. Next I imported a texture to the project by finding one on Google and uploading it from my area.

3. I then edited the blank terrain by adding the grass texture I uploaded to the 3D object.
